For reasons that I cannot track down, SongMeanings.com has run into legal issues sharing the lyrics for this particular song. It doesn’t seem to have stopped them from sharing the lyrics for The Hives’ other songs, but who can understand the legality of the internet in 2013?
As with the opening track on Veni Vidi Vicious, the name of this song kept me from taking it seriously as a track on the album for a long time. Something about the title makes it sound like this is intended to be an interstitial track. A listen to it should have immediately disabused me of that notion, but it took me a couple of years to listen to it – largely because I mostly listened to “Hate To Say I Told You So” and “Die, All Right” to the exclusion of the rest of the album.
Turns out, I was missing out. “The Hives – Introduce The Metric System In Time” is a serious rock track with some great – for lack of a better term – noise. You can hear that noise specifically during some of the verses – it sounds like somebody suddenly stuck a guitar strings in a blender without detaching them from the guitar first. Its awesome. So simple, so punk.
Oh, and the drum work? Chris Dangerous must have been having a bad day when he recorded this because he plays the drums like he’s working out some anger issues. Again, so simple and so punk and so perfect.
