3592. “Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones” by The Hives

Official video:

As I was writing about Tyranosaurus Hives, I learned that they had a single called “Two Timing Touch and Broken Bones” which I’d not heard. I downloaded the track and decided to tack it on at the end here so I don’t have to wait five years to write about it.

Many have pointed out that the guitar riff here is very, very similar to that in The Monkees’ “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone:”

Indeed, this is true, albeit a much sped up version of this riff. There’s also been at least one musical comparison to Devo, but I hear something more like the B-52s.

The Hives, as we’ve discussed, borrowed liberally from many different artists – sometimes so directly that they chose to give those artists royalties and song writing credits. Despite this, they manage to make their songs sound fresh and original through their approaches and performances. Really one of my favorite bands of the last fifteen years here.
