“Constructive Summer”, the first song on the album, hits me where I live. Recently, I’ve been hating my job and every time I drive by a construction site, I am reminded of how much I liked working construction jobs in the summer when I was growing up. It was hard work, but at the end of the day, you knew what you’d accomplished. To the singer, the summer work is his “annual reminder that we can all be something bigger.”
There’s a ton of great American music that celebrates the glory of hard work. Boys and Girls In America featured a ton of songs about love and drugs and Jesus. This song doesn’t fit into that category at all – its about friendship and growth and celebration. Its not my favorite song on the album, but I do find it inspiring.
I also appreciate the final verse:
Raise a toast to saint Joe Strummer
I think he might have been our only decent teacher
getting older only makes it harder to remember
we are our only saviors
Yeah, that pretty much sums up life.
