3706. “Whisper to a Scream (Extended)” by Icicle Works

12″ Single Cover Video:

You’d be hard pressed to find a remix that included as many 80’s remix cliche as this one of “Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream).” At first, it sounds like the single, but as soon as the drums start, you get the traditional 80’s remix rhythm flourishes, which manage to dilute much of the joy of the song’s drum track. Then you get the echo-y chrous teaser, where the first word or two of each line of the chorus is heard but echoes away before the sentence finishes. And, worst of all, you get the teaser verse where it sounds like the song is starting for real, but then it dies off for more rhythm.

I realize club djs needed longer songs in the 80’s so they could go to the bathroom, snort coke and receive oral sex from club kids, but the record industry’s drive to convert pop singles into dance club hits inevitably resulted in extended remixes that weren’t nearly as fun to thrash about to as the original singles. Sometimes, its fun to just hurl your body about for 3 minutes to a great song.
